Madeira - the ‘Island of Eternal Spring’ - is covered in lush subtropical vegetation that gives it the appearance of an actual garden floating in the middle of the Atlantic. You really have to take a stroll along the levadas - a series of aqueducts that form a sophisticated network of canals that run through the unspoilt surroundings of its nature reserves - in order to fully appreciate its true splendour. The neighbouring island of Porto Santo is also worth a visit, boasting 9km of fine sandy beach for the perfect seaside holiday.
